Recording Nissan 200SX

Nissan 200SX
In my summer vacation I recorded some vehicles. One of them was Nissan 200SX. This car sounds extremely nice.

I was waiting perfect day for recording and I almost got it. There was some windy days but in one night it stopped. Best thing was that birds were really quiet too. Only big problem was the mosquitos. Luckily they weren´t problem in the takes but it was pretty painfull to record. Recording took 2 hours and it was really test for nerves. I just needed to wait car sounds fade away before I could kill all the mosquitos from my legs and hands. It was funny to realize how time is really going slow when you have ten mosquitos full of blood on your legs...

Lazy Recording

In 30.08.2010 I woke up at 4am to outside noises. There was really heavy wind. My windows were shaking and making kind of creaking sound. Big trees were bending heavily, big metallic fence was fallen down near my home, lots of trash was flying around etc.

I was really tired but I wanted to capture indoor ambience because I found it pretty interesting. I just drag my recording device near to my bed and pushed rec button. Then I fell at sleep. I woke up after 20 minutes. Luckily I didn´t snore!

Rumbling Thunder

29.07.2010 is the day when I saw first time in my life this kind of thunder. It was lightning for  hours and there wasn´t any pause with it. Thunder which I have seen in my home place have been just a few lightnings and that´s it. This was definitely different kind of thunder. I think thunders are much stronger in coast where I am living in these days.

Thunder started 1am. Luckily I had a few stereo mics ready. I manage to record an hour this awesome rumbling. These kind of things show how field recording is different kind of art than working in the studio. You just have to be ready all the time and you just can´t plan things always. I am feeling lucky because I saw this nature light spectacle with my own eyes and I got nice recordings too.

Recording Suzuki Intruder

Suzuki

I tried some new recording techniques and mics in Suzuki Intruder motorbike recording session. Recording sessions was at Airport of Joensuu.

Day was really nice but weather wasn´t perfect for the recording. There was very strong wind and lot of birds. Some off takes have wind rumble but I got them work with heavy editing process. Day was definitely great learning process.

Oktava MKH-012 And Windshield

I really like these little mics. Firstly they are cheap. Well that is not only reason. They are really nice mics. I like that there are pickup pattern adapters. So, I can change these mics with omni, cardioid or hypercardioid pickup patterns when ever I want. These work differently with different kind of sounds. Also there are differences if you use them as stereo pair or in mono. I use to work with stereo pair with these mics.

Oktava_Rycote
Worst thing with these mics are that they are too sensitive. They work great indoors but in outdoors there will be problems. They can´t handle any wind.  I bought rycote softies for them. I was little suspicious how they work but I was surprised. They work amazingly well. Altough they are not perfect. Rycote softies leaves mic body without wind protection. If there is mid strong wind then there will be problem. But these are worth if there is slight wind.

I think I will try Rycote Baby Ball Gag too. But it will be little later. At this point I will survive with these.

New Recordings!

It is long time from the last time I wrote in this blog.  I got some spare time and I thought now I am going to update it. There have been happening lots of nice things. I have been recording for example cars, motorbike at the airport, explosions and last night awesome thunder! I have also bought some new mics to test how they work with different sounds.
I start to write little bit about these and I am going to update this blog very soon.

Massive recording session

I have been away about 4 weeks. In this time I have been recording lots of sound material. For example snow footsteps, snowmobile driving, animals, army vehicles, cross skiing, gun shots and even bullet bypass sounds! That is just little part what I recorded. I was definitely enjoying field recordings because weather was perfect for me. It went far below -20C in the best days. Sounds became more clear. It was almost every day job to record and prepare things but I just loved it. Someone said that I am crazy to go outside on that weather - weather never have been problem for me. It is more problem for equipment but I have some tricks to make things to work.

Everything went smoothly but  I also got taste of difficult side of recording. I went to zoo and tried to catch some lion and tiger sounds. Unfortunately I just got a few tiger sounds. Animals are just one pain in the ***. Although I recorded some nice exotic birds a lot and some waterfall ambience which made work worth something. I was pretty prepared to make things work. Equipment was checked many times (cables, batteries, sound quality) and most important - back up was made after every recording session!

I started to clean up and rename my material and there is many hours of it. I'm not  even in middle of it. So far what I have been listening I think I got best snow footsteps sounds for a long time. Everything was perfect for it. Right temperature (-30C) which made natural and long beautiful echo/reverb for those, quiet place and good microphones. I am also pretty surprised of vehicles sounds. Rare vehicles sounds are much more interesting than average car or motorbike sounds.

I have been thinking to make a really heavy recording session in the summer. Lots of things have been planned years ago and now I am pulling strings and making contacts. I have been buying right equipment for that and I have been testing lots of different kind of mic techniques. I will inform more about it when I will get some results.
